Spending Time With Dad

I’m spending time with dad for two weeks and I’m loving it. He will be 89 next month so I savor every minute I get to spend with him.

I went to GA a week and a half ago to spend the weekend at my sister’s house (where dad now lives) and brought him up to my house in SC.

In case you don’t know, I’ve been a food blogger since January 2013 – that’s my day job. I have a recipe/party tips website that I absolutely love.

I started this site for fun. It’s more of a lifestyle blog that focuses on building and decorating our new modern farmhouse.

If you know me from An Alli Event, then you probably know that my dad’s sour cream pound cake is one of the top recipes on my food site.

Whenever I show his photo on my An Alli Event Facebook page, several women will comment, “He’s a cutie. Is he available?” Umm, no! 🙂

My sister took this photo at her house the last time he baked his famous pound cake. (Her kitchen is gorgeous!)

My sweet, amazing, best-cook-in-the-world mama graduated to heaven in May of 2016 and it threw us all a curve ball, especially my dear daddy. They did everything together and had been married for almost 63 years!

All of a sudden, he was living alone. It’s a five-hour drive from my house to his so I bought him a GrandPad so that I could see him when I talked to him. He doesn’t care for smartphones and he doesn’t have wifi so that was out.

The rest of the family lives near dad so he is well taken care of, but I like to see him when I talk to him.

The First Time Dad Sees My House

My dad moved in with my sister about a year ago because his health was beginning to decline a bit. Thank God my sister retired, moved back from Colorado, and built a house in GA. She and her family lived in CO for 38 years.

So, last week was the first time dad has seen my house in person. He has seen photos, videos, etc.

Dad is so cute. He said my bonus room was almost as big as his and mom’s first house. His house payment back then was $80 a month. Of course, everything is relative.

Dad loves my white oak hardwood floors and coffered ceiling in the great room. He said it looks like it’s well built. And that if windows were made single pane like long ago, I couldn’t have all these windows in my great room. It would be too dangerous according to dad. 🙂

He doesn’t really say much about decor, but if he says it looks like your house is well built, trust me, it’s well built.

It does my heart good to be spending time with dad. I’ve been making his favorites like peach cobbler, lemon bars, and banana pudding.
